I suppose I am the toxicological pathologist that has used Roelee for the longest period – over 25 years so far. During that time, I have used it almost daily and I have also been fortunate enough to have had some input into its development.

Having witnessed the inception of many pathology computer programs in the early 1980s, Roelee has always stood apart from the others for the difference in its basic approach to the task and its immense in-built analytical power and sheer flexibility.

Most rival programs have concentrated on an easy-to-use interface for the pathologist to enter data and then struggled to provide adequate reporting and analytical features. Roelee, however, was designed to analyse and report the data from the outset, at the initial cost of making the data entry interface a little less intuitive. Although it required a slight conceptual adjustment, at first, I know that I could never revert to something more limited in scope. By analogy, I suppose it is the difference between an upright piano and a church organ – the tunes may be similar but the overall impact is incomparable.

The development of software for conducting peer review from data generated on many other systems is an almost unique feature of Roelee and one that I have used since its inception; in fact I asked them to try to do it! Because of their open approach, the problems that initially bedevilled the programming were always explained by the two Johns (often in words of one syllable), so that we could achieve the best result and, this feature has become more refined to enable me to use it with confidence all over the world.

During the development of the program, there have been issues of new technology, user-friendliness, security, 21 CFR Part 11, new analytical techniques and report formats and the challenges of the ever-changing computer operating systems imposed upon us by Bill Gates and his cronies. Through all of that, Peter and the two Johns have coped with all the trials and tribulations with great energy, innovation, humour and above all rapidity. I know of no other software provider that can assess, analyse and rectify problems in such a short period – often minutes or hours.

The generation of an expanding user group has seen more strides forward, with enhancements and improvements that have allowed this cost-effective, powerful program to thrive whilst most of the early rivals have withered on the vine.
